TheNextWeb is reporting that at Facebook’s F8 developer conference, Microsoft and Facebook announced the beta release of Docs.com. The site is built on, what seems to be, a stripped down version of Microsoft’s upcoming Office 2010 Web Apps platform, and can be used to create and share Office documents with Facebook friends. The service can be used for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents.

“Now you can discover, create, and share Microsoft Office documents with your Facebook friends. Built using Microsoft Office 2010 – Docs for Facebook lets you work from just about anywhere with the familiar Office experience”

Docs.com is part of Microsof’ts FUSE Labs, which is centered around creating rich, online, social experiences. The site seems to be fairly functional, though it’s still in beta and should not be relied upon as your primary office suite. It’s interesting to note, that according to the FAQ, only one person can edit a document at a time. This means that although it’s a social experience, it’s not an actual collaboration tool. Google Docs still has the upper hand in this category, as will Office Web Apps when it’s released.

It’s unclear what kind of integration, if any, this site will have with Office Web Apps when it’s released. After looking around the site, there doesn’t seem to be any mention of SkyDrive storage or anything like that. For all we know, the service may store all of your documents on Facebook and its servers, making it a completely separate entity from Microsoft’s upcoming offering.

Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, announced today that Facebook will be launching their new Open Graph protocol and APIs, eliminating Facebook Connect, according to Mashable, via the F8 conference.

Facebook Open Graph is set to lockdown on their APIs available to developers, where third-party websites will be able to gain access this. With the new Open Graph protocol and OAuth 2.0 standards, Facebook will limit the information third-party websites will be able to gather, and open up their social graphs to users, such as the Like feature across the web.

Microsoft is among the 30 or so companies that have been approved by Facebook to gain access to individuals information, including general information about you and your friends – all of which will allow an opt-out feature when launched.

Microsoft and Facebook have also launched their new Docs.com service, a new social office, allowing users to share documents with each other.

The Facebook Connect name and service will be eliminated, or possibly revised in the future, with a new name. Facebook did not mention if they have any plans to replace the Facebook Connect service.
