Born in a traditional Maharashtrian family in Nasik, Sayali Bhagat has big dreams for her future. She got her management degree from Mumbai University.
She has a knack for Indo-Western Fusion dance and she ahs been modeling since quite sometime. Sayali won the Femina Miss India crown in 2004 and like most of her contemporaries, entered the film industry. Prior to this her family had no contact with the Bollywood.
This budding model-cum-actress idolizes Baba Amte for his selfless work and for what he has done for the welfare of the tribals and the lepers. Sayali has also featured in a documentary film that is based on his life.
Sayali made her Bollywood debut in 2007 with The Train. Her co-stars in the movie were newcomer, Geeta Basra and the serial kisser, Emraan Hashmi.
For her, life is like an ice cream and she likes to enjoy every bit of it. No wonder that she enjoys whatever she does and sees that it is done well.
Our last entry of this week is once again Madhur Bhandarkar’s FASHION. The film once again falls by quite a bit, this time even in Bombay. Checking out the numbers, FASHION collected 42 lakhs from Bombay, 6.50 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 2 lakhs from Baroda, 1.70 lakhs from Surat, 11 lakhs from Pune, 24 lakhs from Delhi city, 3.65 lakhs from Noida, 3.75 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 1.35 lakhs from Kanpur, 2.10 lakhs from Lucknow, 3.35 lakhs from Chandigarh, 5 lakhs from Gurgaon, 3 lakhs from Nagpur, 3.35 lakhs from Jaipur, 7 lakhs from Hyderabad, 1.35 lakhs from Aurangabad, 14 lakhs from Bangalore and 3.50 lakhs from Madras. With another 2.25 crores during its third outing, FASHION has netted a creditable 28.50 crores from India, the highest ever for a Madhur Bhandarkar movie. Given the release costs FASHION is now an above average fare in India but has been totally rejected in the Overseas.
Rajshri’s Sonu Sood and Eesha Koppikar starrer, EK VIVAAH… AISA BHI is quite steady on the lower side. The film collected 3.50 lakhs from Bombay, 1 lakh from Rajkot, 1.50 lakhs from Delhi city, 1.05 lakhs from Calcutta, 1.50 lakhs from Patna, 1.35 lakhs from Raipur, 10 lakhs from Jaipur and 2.50 lakhs from Hyderabad. During its second week EK VIVAAH… AISA BHI added another 70 lakhs and has so far netted nearly 2 crores in two weeks from India. The film, like many of the previous Rajshri ventures, has gone in for a limited release and so the final verdict is still awaited.
After a hurricane like start but a crashing second week, GOLMAAL RETURNS shows another huge drop. The Rohit Shetty directed film collected 45 lakhs from Bombay, 10 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 3.65 lakhs from Rajkot, 2 lakhs from Jamnagar, 1.50 lakhs from Pune, 1.35 lakhs from Nasik, 6 lakhs from Delhi city, 2.15 lakhs from Noida, 1.50 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 2 lakhs from Kanpur, 3 lakhs from Lucknow, 2.25 lakhs from Agra, 1.10 lakhs from Gurgaon, 6 lakhs from Nagpur, 1.10 lakhs from Raipur, 3 lakhs from Indore, 4 lakhs from Jaipur, 7 lakhs from Hyderabad, 2.25 lakhs from Aurangabad and 1.10 lakhs from Mangalore. During its latest outing, GOLMAAL RETURNS adds another 2.50 crores and has so far netted 53.50 crores in three weeks from India. Taking into account the fancy procurement price, GOLMAAL RETURNS is now an above average fare in India. The film has done fairly well in UK grossing $529,221.
Checking out the performance of Karan Johar’s Tarun Mansukhani directed DOSTANA, the multiplex audience has lapped it up quite well, especially in cities like Bombay, Delhi (mainly South Delhi), Pune and Bangalore. But collections in even these cities and, of course, in other places, began to drop from Monday/Tuesday onwards. During the week, DOSTANA collected 6.20 crores from Bombay, 1.15 crores from Ahmedabad, 18 lakhs from Rajkot, 3.70 lakhs from Jamnagar, 4.70 lakhs (gross) from Bhavnagar, 3 lakhs from Gandhidham, 31 lakhs from Pune, 11.65 lakhs from Nasik, 3 crores from Delhi city, 50.65lakhs from Noida, 24 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 13 lakhs from Kanpur, 33.65 lakhs from Lucknow, 6.35 lakhs from Agra, 5 lakhs from Meerut, 4.65 lakhs from Aligarh, 81.25 lakhs from Gurgaon, 19.15 lakhs from Faridabad, 1.30 crores from Calcutta, 3.35 lakhs from Guwahati, 35 lakhs from Nagpur, 2.25 lakhs from Akola, 5 lakhs from Raipur, 29 lakhs from Indore, 37 lakhs from Jaipur, 4 lakhs (gross) from Ajmer, 3.50 lakhs from Bikaner, 80 lakhs from Hyderabad, 1.45 lakhs from Warangal, 10.50 lakhs from Mangalore and 2.50 lakhs from Coimbatore. During its opening week, the Abhishek, John, Priyanka, Kirron and Bobby (special appearance) starrer netted an impressive 27–28 crores from India. Given the fact that Yash Raj Film Distributors had acquired the world rights (excluding audio) of DOSTANA for Rs. 52 crore, the film has to sustain in the coming weeks in India. And it will be aided by overseas theatrical business and electronic rights. The film has done superbly in the Overseas, grossing $1,016,800 from UK and $985,433 from the US.
Despite universal acclaim, DASVIDANIYA failed to get substantial collections. Though credit must be given for whatever it achieved in the presence of a mighty opposition like DOSTANA. The film collected 30 lakhs from Bombay, 2.50 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1 lakh from Baroda, 6 lakhs from Pune, 12 lakhs from Delhi city, 3.50 lakhs from Noida, 1.15 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 1.10 lakhs from Lucknow, 3.50 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.65 lakhs from Indore and 6.50 lakhs from Hyderabad. In it’s opening week, DASVIDANIYA has netted around 1.20 crores from India. If it can show some legs in the coming weeks, DASVIDANIYA can hope for at least a recovery, but even that looks very difficult, if not impossible.
After a steady flow of biggies from around ‘Diwali’, the coming Friday will see an interesting clash between two smaller ventures, UTV Motion Pictures’ OYE LUCKY! LUCKY OYE! and Onir’s SORRY BHAI! One feels that despite SORRY BHAI’s much better cast of Shabana Azmi, Boman Irani, Sharman Joshi and Chitrangda Singh, it will be the better publicized Paresh Rawal, Abhay Deol and Neetu Chandra starrer, OYE LUCKY! LUCKY OYE! that will finally walk away with the honours! What must also be kept in mind is that comedy forms the backbone of the both OYE LUCKY! LUCKY OYE! and SORRY BHAI! and so audience will be divided and it will damage both the ventures.
Last Friday saw the release of one of the most lavishly mounted projects of recent times, Subhash Ghai’s Anil, Salman, Zayed and Katrina starrer, YUVVRAAJ. Unfortunately, the film went the way we had predicted in our last report. Released at around 84 cinemas of Bombay–Thane thru Raksha Entertainment Pvt. Ltd., the film had an ordinary opening. Outside of Bombay YUVVRAAJ’s opening was below the mark almost everywhere, except for a few stations of Rajasthan, Central and North India. Trade feels that YUVVRAAJ has turned out to be too boring and too long. It needs heavy re–editing but even that wont be able to save the film because it is inherently a poorly executed show all the way. It is likely to entail heavy losses to its distributors. YUVVRAAJ has also been rejected in the Overseas, grossing a poor $168,091 in the UK and a below par $264,362 from US.
OYE LUCKY LUCKY OYE would be the first film in 2008 where Abhay Deol would be seen. However, with the release of this UTV production which is helmed by second time director Dibakar Banerjee (KHOSLA KA GHOSLA), has Paresh Rawal in a triple role and Neetu Chandra as a female lead opposite him, Abhay Deol would certainly be looking at his yet another experimental film finally managing to hit jackpot.
So far Abhay Deol has featured in 5 films – SOCHA NA THA, AHISTA AHISTA, HONEYMOON TRAVELS PVT. LTD., EK CHALIS KI LAST LOCAL and MANORAMA – SIX FEET UNDER. Though he has seen critical acclaim in each of his films, HONEYMOON TRAVELS PVT. LTD was a bona fide success while EK CHALIS KI LAST LOCAL too saw a decent run in the limited screens it was shown.
Now, even as he features in the biggest solo film (OYE LUCKY LUCKY OYE) in his career so far (HONEYMOON TRAVELS PVT. LTD was a success at the box office but it had 5 other male leads featuring in it), Abhay is continuing to be experimental in his choice of films. That’s because immediately after the release of OLLO, he is expected to get heads down in the promotion of DEV D, a film by Anurag Kashyap.
If the first look is anything to go by, one can well state that NO SMOKING was only a trailer that Anurag Kashyap showed when it comes to going truly wild in imagination. Meanwhile, Abhay has continued working with newer directors, as apparent from his go ahead for JUNCTION, a film which brings CHAK DE girls Vidya Malvade and Shilpa Shukla once again. The film is directed by Atul Sabharwal, the man who has written screenplay of films as diverse as PHIR MILENGE and DARNA MANA HAI.
Looks like Abhay is not quite following the tried and tested trends when it comes to choice of films!
‘Come, fall in love….with your brother’s bride’ goes the punch line of Onir directed SORRY BHAI. Shocking as it may sound; it only brought a smile on Chitrangda Singh’s face.
“Really, so many people ask me if I was shocked to know about the basic plotline of SORRY BHAI, that of a woman falling for the younger brother of a man whom she loves and is about to get married. I in fact went ‘wow’. I was plain amused since this was a situation that I hadn’t thought of”, laughs Chitrangda Singh who is aware that her comeback to films years after HAZARON KHWAHISHEN AISI is being widely anticipated.
“In fact on hearing the storyline, I went into this entire thought process of thinking that ‘ya, it could all be possible in real life’. After all, if you live with someone for a long time, it becomes like a habit. My character in the film too falls out of love and the falls back into love with the younger. I really found the basic premise really interesting”, adds Chitrangda.
“The two people in this character’s life are really very different and this is what brings in the spark into her life. While one (Sanjay Suri) is very proper, very disciplined and just doesn’t put a foot wrong, the other (Sharman Joshi) is just the opposite. He is a little goofy, isn’t quite proper in his conduct and moreover isn’t really a meticulous planner. He brings in fun in her life”.
Talking about her choice of films, she says, “Finally I am relieved that I am doing a light hearted entertainer after heavy duty films like HAZARON…. and KAL – YESTERDAY AND TOMORROW. This brings in some variety in the kind of work I would love to do.”
There are many memorable moments right from the selection to the execution of a film. Some memories fade away with time while some remain with you forever. NISHABD fame Jiah Khan can never forget that moment when she was selected for GHAJINI.
The audition that she had to do for the film was very hard and long one. Worst was the fear of rejection that played on her psyche. “But when Aamir and Murugadoss told me I was in, I could not believe it! I was in tears! I broke down completely. I was overwhelmed! I was so happy that tears automatically welled up my eyes and began rolling down my cheeks,” she says.
The other moment that’s etched in Jiah’s memory is the first day of the shoot of GHAJINI. “Aamir told my mother that if I was a part of GHAJINI it was because of my own achievement and talent. It was the best compliment I have received that too from the best actor of the country––Aamir Khan. What more could I ask for.”
Before you get stunned by the aforementioned title and draw any conclusion about our style Bhai Salman Khan, let us open up that its about Salman Khan’s much–in–news upcoming film VEER which we are talking about. As per the latest buzz from the B–town, seasoned actor Jackie Shroff aka Jaggu dada would be seen playing a negative character in the film.
This is not the first time when the two actors (Salman & Jackie) would be working together. Earlier also they have shared the screen space in movies like BANDHAN and KAHIN PYAAR NA HO JAAYE. But the only difference this time around is that while in the earlier 2 flicks both the actors shared cordial relations (in BANDHAN Salman played a devoted brother–in–law of Jackie Shroff and in KAHIN PYAAR NA HO JAAYE both were childhood friends) than in VEER Jackie would stand as a strong opposition / villain for Salman Khan.
