The Guinness Book of Records named the vast pool beside the sea in Chile as the biggest in the world.

Our guide to the guides to what to do if you’re installing Apple’s operating system update

Apple’s Snow Leopard: just before you update..
Of course your first starting place if you want an overview of Apple’s Snow Leopard (aka Mac OS X 10.6.0) would be our own review. But there’s so much else out there on the web too. Here’s a quick roundup; add your own useful links.
Help!
Apple has some support pages. Probably the first place to start would be with installation (PDF link). This has changed somewhat between previous versions and the latest: particularly because there now isn’t an “archive and install” option as there used to be. (Except there sort-of is.)
Apple also has a page of “known incompatibilities”
TidBits also explains about installation, and how it’s changed.
Macworld has a wiki of known and emerging problems. If you’re in France and using Orange and trying to send Mail, it’s got a particularly helpful tip.
Wired also has a how-to wiki on upgrading to Snow Leopard.
The Register is mirroring a list of incompatible software being compiled by at a wikidot page.
Interesting: Jason Snell at Macworld points out that Snow Leopard calculates space used according to “1,000 bytes = 1kb” rather than the old “1,024 bytes = 1kb”. This suggests (surely?) that Snow Leopard will tell you that your hard drive is more full than by the previous measurement system. Then again, it’ll tell you that you have a bigger hard drive. Swings and roundabouts.
Reviews
The Register’s review, which I think was the UK’s first; and its story about the takedown notice from Apple which it ignored. It’s long, and based on a developer build that was almost surely the same as the Gold Master (GM).
Macworld gives you more than you may be able to comprehend. Of note: Rob Griffiths on what annoyances have and haven’t been fixed between Leopard and Snow Leopard.
Opening and closing applications, flicking between windows, and even booting up and shutting down feels slicker. Snow Leopard’s support for 64-bit computing is key to this, as is its use of OpenCL, which utilises the power of the Mac’s graphics processors to run other programs and applications, giving the entire system more grunt.
I’m not convinced that 64-bit or OpenCL have anything to do with those perceptions, but am willing to be corrected.
We’re awaiting John Siracusa’s usual in-depth review at Ars Technica where he points out that it should have been a 0, not a 1, at 0×005335333553544222.
Er, have we missed some other UK papers’ reviews? Perhaps not.
BusinessWeek’s Stephen Wildstrom says that it’s a “steak more than sizzle” upgrade that’s a no-brainer for [Microsoft] Exchange users.
What else have you noticed around the web?

Mysterious accounts seem to be appearing all over the popular Twitter micro-blogging website. The suspicious accounts appear to be posting complete gibberish, when in reality are posting executable commands that are downloading malware to victims computers.
Hackers have always longed to find new ways to hide their tracks and make attacks harder to see coming, but now hackers have turned to Twitter to become the host of a serious of attacks against users. Hackers have managed to form a botnet using Twitter as a way to control compromised PCs.
The compromised computers could potentially launch DoS (denial of service) attacks – something Twitter has been hit by multiple times over the last few months – or spread spam to other users, turning the victim into a botnet as well.
Twitter is now reviewing the suspected accounts and suspending suspicious activity from happening, but since the shutdowns, more command-line accounts are being registered, popping up all over the website. These accounts could possibly be the very same ones that turn computers into slaves, attacking the very site that affected them.

Microsoft today is unveiling its new “OneApp” initiative, but contrary to the speculation that followed the recent discovery of a related trademark filing, it’s not a combined Windows Mobile-Zune application platform. OneApp is a program to run mobile apps including Facebook, Twitter, Windows Live Messenger and others on feature phones, those low-end devices that come at little or no cost with wireless plans.
Except it’s not something that people in the U.S. or other developed nations can expect to find anytime soon — if ever — at their local wireless stores. Targeted specifically at people in emerging countries, the initiative will be launched in the coming weeks through an initial partnership with Blue Label Telecoms in South Africa.
Microsoft says it will be striking similar deals to roll out OneApp through other wireless companies in developing markets around the world, such as India, China, Brazil and elsewhere.
The Redmond company’s’s Windows Mobile operating system for smartphones has been struggling against Apple and others in the market for mobile apps on higher-end devices. Microsoft says the separate OneApp initiative looks to take advantage of the widespread, continuing use of feature phones around the world. Tim McDonough, a Microsoft senior director, pointed out that feature phones will make up about 800 million of the 1.1 billion mobile phones expected to be sold in the next year.
“It’s a massive category,” he said.
The challenge for OneApp is that feature phones, by definition, are smaller, weaker and less consistent in design than smartphones are. The company says it has adjusted to those limitations by giving OneApp itself an extremely small footprint, about 150 KB.
Microsoft is also applying its “software plus services” approach that combines computing and storage on the device and in remote data centers — shifting between the “cloud” and the phone depending on the amount of available memory and other resources on the device. The apps themselves are also small, averaging about 13 to 15 KB, and not exceeding 30 KB, McDonough said.
Despite those limitations, it’s “a very good user experience,” with graphics and not just text, he said.
There will also be specialized applications for local markets, such as a mobile wallet for making purchases or buying train tickets.
Pricing for usage of OneApp will be up to telecom operators and Microsoft’s other local partners. In the case of Blue Label, for example, usage of the program will count against the prepaid data plans through which people use the company’s wireless services.
McDonough declined to go into detail about how Microsoft plans to make money from the initiative in the long run.
“Our approach is to drive revenue for the ecosystem, and for us as part of that ecosystem. As time goes on, as we start rolling this out with more partners, we’ll start sharing more of the business model,” he said. Pressed for more details, he said there will be ads in the product over time, but he declined to be more specific about the company’s plans.
Why not offer OneApp for feature phones in the U.S. or other developed nations? “When we look at how big the opportunity is in emerging markets, there’s so much to do, to do that well, that that’s our focus at the moment,” McDonough said.

Nokia announced today it has joined the race in bringing a new netbook to the market offering up to 12 hours of battery life with 3G ready Internet. The small, lightweight and portable mini-laptop is said to weight in at 1.25 kilograms and comes with the backing of Microsoft’s Windows operating system, most likely Windows 7.
The mini-laptop or netbook will ship with WiFi-enabled ready for Internet usage. The netbook will also have an integrated A-GPS working on Ovi Maps allows for pinpoint navigation; the ultra lightweight, aluminum chassis netbook comes equipped with a 12 hour battery life for maximum usage.
The netbook is said to come with an easily accessible SD Card reader, a HDMI port for HD video out, a front facing camera for video chat, integrated Bluetooth adapter, all enclosed in the 10-inch glass HD ready display.
Nokia will also be offering its Nokia Music Store for playback of millions of tracks for on-the-go entertainment, or using the Ovi Suite to sync your mobile smartphone with the netbook.
The Nokia Booklet 3G will be announced on September 2, 2009 at the Nokia World show.

Microsoft’s upcoming Office 2010 suite packs some excellent new improvements; each of the various applications has had significant improvements, and now we’ve been shown a teaser of the presentations capable in the new PowerPoint, from Microsoft itself. Specifically, the video shows off the DirectX integration within the application, which helps with creating much more impressive presentations.
In the video, it shows the vast amount of new effects available, all of which are vastly improved over the older version of the software. As a few people have pointed out, the effects bring PowerPoint to the same level as that of Apple’s Keynote software, which is most certainly a good thing. According to the PowerPoint team’s blog, the new version will be packing the following:
* Fully hardware-accelerated rendering engine
* New transition effects and an updated user interface
* Revamped animation effects and a brand new UI (timelines!)
* Animation Painter (copy your animations between objects)
* Choreograph animations with multimedia
We’ve included the video below, in a nice high definition format, so please enjoy and comment with your thoughts.
Recently at the Hacking at Random (HAR) conference held in the Netherlands, Karsten Nohl detailed plans for cracking standard GSM cell phone encryption, known as A5/1, and will be making the results available for anyone to use. GSM stands for Global System for Mobile communications and is the most commonly used cell phone standard in the world, and is used in Europe, Africa, Asia, New Zealand, Australia, America and Canada.
The GSM flaw is massive and would affect not only businesses but individuals also as once the hack is complete it means anyone with a $500 radio card and a laptop will be able to listen in to GSM calls, making it easier for criminals to obtain personal data and making listening in on normal voice calls a real and everyday threat.
Stan Schatt, Vice President and Practice Director, Healthcare and Security at ABI Research, commented, “Potentially this news could have as profound an impact on the cell phone industry as the breaking of WEP encryption had on the wireless LAN industry.” He continued on to say “… average folks also have to fear criminals learning valuable information about their bank accounts, personal affairs, etc. Equally if not more important, our research shows that employees talk about corporate sensitive information on their cell phones a good deal of the time….If people do nothing, we are likely to start to hear stories of sensitive information being compromised, acquisition information being leaked, personal financial security information being compromised, etc. We could see tales of blackmail and extortion on the rise.””
The hack had been known about and was fabled to be in existence since as early as 1996, but had never been discovered. Simon Bransfield-Garth, CEO Cellcrypt said “Everybody has known for quite some time that a theoretical hack of GSM existed. This news means that the theoretical risk will become a very real one within the next six months..” he continued on to say that in research recently conducted that will be released soon it was found that “79% of people discuss confidential issues by phone every few days with 64% making such calls daily.”
The hack is said to be “incredibly simple” to perform and would affect day-to-day use of mobiles. If the hack became widespread, it would be likely that personally identifiable information that is shared over a phone could be easily stolen – such as bank details, social security numbers, credit card details, addresses, and full names.
Hacking at Random has made available Karsten Nohl’s powerpoint presentation here.
Cellcrypt has published guidelines for managing the security of voice calls on their website.
